How do I identify a carved wooden panel?

Carved wooden panels feature three dimensional designs shaped directly into hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany. They often take the form of wall hanging plaques or architectural inserts. Examining the reverse reveals tool marks and the natural ageing of the timber, distinguishing hand carved historic examples from later reproductions.

What subjects appear on marble relief plaques?

Marble relief plaques frequently depict classical figures, literary profiles such as Virgil and Dante, and mythological or religious scenes. Victorian examples also showcase nudes and portrait busts in profile. The carving isolates the head and shoulders or figurative groups against a flat stone ground, designed specifically for wall display.

Are these paintings original or copies?

The selection includes period original oil paintings alongside historic works created after earlier masters, such as compositions after Raphael, Correggio, and Van Dyck. These after-period works formed an established part of European artistic tradition. Each painting carries the stylistic markers and canvas characteristics of its specific century of production.

How should I hang heavy carved wall art?

Heavy items like carved mahogany panels, marble plaques, and giltwood framed oil paintings require secure wall anchors suited to the weight of wood and stone. Ensuring fixings engage directly with wall studs or solid masonry provides stable support. Using appropriate hanging wire or brackets matching the original D-rings or fixings on the reverse preserves the structural integrity of the frame.
