Where did people place these cabinets?

These cabinets served multiple domestic functions in drawing rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. Compact versions acted as bedside storage while larger sideboards and commodes stood against principal reception room walls. Their enclosed shelving kept household items and drinks out of sight while the decorated tops displayed ceramics or lamps.

How do I care for lacquered surfaces?

Lacquered wood requires gentle treatment to protect the delicate painted and gilt details. Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources. Avoid chemical polishes and moisture, which can damage the aged varnish layers and lift the underlying metallic decoration.

How do I distinguish 19th-century pieces from 1920s versions?

Nineteenth-century examples often exhibit heavier timber construction and deeper, more oxidized lacquer layers. Regency and Victorian pieces frequently utilise traditional joinery methods and hand-mixed pigments. Twentieth-century iterations from the 1920s and 1930s sometimes display brighter coloured grounds, such as vivid blues and reds, alongside Art Deco design influences.

Japanning is a European technique developed to replicate Asian lacquerware without using genuine East Asian tree sap. Artisans applied successive coats of varnish, drying and polishing each layer before adding gold and coloured designs. This method allowed cabinetmakers to produce exotic decorated furniture in domestic workshops.
