How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

Heavy carved timber and gesso frames require direct attachment to structural wall studs or masonry using heavy-duty brackets and fixings suited to the weight of the piece. Professional installation is strongly recommended for large formats. Ensure the hanging wire or integrated D-rings are checked for strength before mounting, as these antique frames carry considerable heft from their solid wood construction and glass plates.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many surviving pieces retain their original glass plates, often identifiable by slight distortions, handmade irregularities, and natural foxing. Replacement plates do occur when earlier glass was broken or degraded beyond use. Examining the silver backing and the way the glass sits within the rabbet reveals whether a plate has been renewed during the history of the frame.

How do I date a carved wooden frame?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as the symmetry of rococo scrolls, the weight of Victorian gesso decoration, or the specific timber species utilised in the construction. Secondary woods on the reverse and assembly methods also offer chronological indicators. Comparing the decorative vocabulary against known periods like the Georgian era or the Arts and Crafts movement clarifies the origin.
