What is architectural salvage timber?

Architectural salvage timber consists of decorative and structural wooden elements rescued from older buildings prior to demolition or renovation. These items include carved panels, fireplace surrounds, columns, and brackets. They allow modern spaces to incorporate genuine historic craftsmanship, historic patination, and traditional joinery methods that are rarely replicated today.

How were antique wooden panels used?

Historic wooden panels originally formed part of interior wall panelling, ecclesiastical screens, or furniture assemblies. They provided insulation and visual decoration in wealthy homes and public buildings. Today, buyers frequently mount them on walls as art, integrate them into custom cabinetry, or use them as architectural overmantles.

How do I date a carved wooden panel?

Dating relies on stylistic motifs, joint construction, and the type of timber used. For example, 16th-century pieces often feature linenfold designs in English oak, while 18th-century carvings display classical acanthus leaves and symmetrical scrolls. Tool marks left by hand chisels also help distinguish genuinely old work from later reproductions.

How do I care for antique timber salvage?

Antique timber requires stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the wood from drying out, cracking, or warping. Keep pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Occasional applications of neutral beeswax help maintain the natural lustre of the surface without building up excessive residue.
