How do I hang a heavy giltwood mirror?

These substantial frames require secure wall anchoring into structural studs or masonry using heavy-duty fixings. Professional installation is recommended to support the combined weight of the carved wood and glass. Ensure the hanging wire or brackets distribute the load evenly across the frame structure rather than relying on a single central point.

Can I burn real candles in girandole arms?

While the arms are built to hold candles, modern practice often favours LED alternatives to protect the antique gilding from smoke damage and dripping wax. Heat from naked flames can accelerate the degradation of historic gesso and finishes. If you choose traditional candles, keep them trimmed and monitor them closely to preserve the surrounding woodwork.

What is the difference between a mirror and a girandole?

A standard wall mirror simply provides reflection and decorative framing, whereas a girandole incorporates functional candle arms projecting from the base or sides. This dual purpose made girandoles essential for lighting dark rooms before electricity. The added metal or wooden arms distinguish the girandole as a source of illumination as well as a visual ornament.
