How do I adjust the shelves?

Most period bookcases use either a wooden ratcheted rack system or brass studs inserted into vertical tracks. You lift the shelf slightly to disengage it from the supports and reposition it into the desired slot. Older mechanisms require careful handling to avoid damaging the interior veneer. Ensure both sides sit level before placing books back onto the shelf.

Are these bookcases suitable for heavy books?

Solid mahogany construction provides robust natural strength capable of supporting standard octavo and folio volumes. Adjustable shelving rests securely on fixed timber bearers or metal pins designed for heavy loads. Very long shelves can sag over decades if overloaded, so balance heavier volumes toward the outer edges. Inspect the internal support strips periodically to ensure they remain firmly secured.

How do I clean mahogany?

Dust the surfaces regularly with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to prevent grit accumulation on the polished finish. Apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Avoid silicone sprays and keep the bookcase away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Consistent humidity levels prevent the mahogany and its veneer from shrinking or cracking.

Can these units stand away from walls?

Most open bookcases feature finished sides but unfinished or plain pine backboards, meaning they work best positioned directly against a wall. Breakfront and freestanding library editions often have panelled backs suitable for room divider placement. Tall bookcases benefit from wall-fixing brackets for safety, particularly in rooms with heavy foot traffic. Check the plumb of the floor before loading the upper tiers.
