What is a gueridon table used for?

These tables served as freestanding centrepieces in nineteenth-century rooms, holding lamps, decorative objects, or serving drinks. Their round tops and central pedestals allowed people to walk entirely around them without hitting table legs.

How do I identify French Empire style?

French Empire pieces rely on classical motifs like rams heads, swans, and bold mahogany surfaces. They often combine dark timber with heavy marble tops and bright brass mounts for a formal appearance.

Are marble tops original to these tables?

Many nineteenth-century gueridon tables were built specifically to carry fitted stone slabs like white, grey, or porphyry marble. Inspecting the inner wooden rim reveals whether the recess was designed to support a heavy stone insert.

Where should I place a pedestal table?

A round pedestal table fits well in the middle of a hallway, a large drawing room, or a library. Because the central column supports the weight, chairs fit neatly around the perimeter without leg obstruction.
