What is a campaign storage trunk?

A campaign storage trunk is a robust wooden box fitted with metal brackets, built for military officers and travellers needing portable luggage. These pieces date primarily from the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian periods, constructed from durable woods like teak and camphor wood.

Why use camphor wood?

Camphor wood naturally repels moths and insects, making it an ideal material for protecting uniforms and linens during extended voyages. The timber also resists humidity, which helped preserve contents in tropical climates.

How do I date a trunk?

Dating relies on the style of the brass hardware, the choice of timber, and construction methods such as dovetailing. Georgian examples tend to feature mahogany and heavy iron bindings, whereas Victorian pieces frequently utilise camphor wood and brass mounts.

How were these trunks used?

Officers and merchants used them to transport clothing, documents, and personal belongings across land and sea. The boxes doubled as temporary furniture or writing desks inside tents and cabins.

Are these pieces waterproof?

While dense timbers and tightly fitted lids offer protection against rain and spray, these chests are not entirely waterproof. They were designed for general travel conditions rather than submersion.
