What is a salon chair?

A salon chair is a light, decorative seat designed for formal reception rooms and drawing rooms rather than heavy daily use. These pieces typically date from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, combining comfortable upholstery with elegant wood frames.

How do I date a brown wood chair?

Dating relies on identifying stylistic markers, timber choices, and construction methods associated with periods like the Victorian or Edwardian eras. Mahogany balloon backs generally suggest mid-nineteenth-century manufacture, whilst inlaid satinwood on mahogany points to the Edwardian period.

Can I use salon chairs for dining?

Some salon chairs double as dining or occasional seating, provided their seat height and frame construction suit a dining table. Several listings combine salon and dining descriptions, reflecting the versatile nature of nineteenth-century drawing room furniture.

What wood was used for these chairs?

Cabinet makers primarily used mahogany and walnut as the foundational brown hardwoods for nineteenth-century seating. Finer examples incorporate kingwood veneers, satinwood inlay, and occasional exotic hardwoods to enhance the visual appeal.
