What is a Corpus Christi cross?

A Corpus Christi cross is a devotional object featuring a sculptural representation of Christ affixed to the wooden structure. These pieces date across several centuries and originate from various European traditions. Examples incorporate materials like box wood, olive wood, and brass. They served personal devotion and ecclesiastical settings.

How do I identify cross banding?

Cross banding involves laying narrow strips of wood veneer so the grain runs perpendicular to the main panel. Cabinet makers used this technique to frame furniture tops with a contrasting border. This detail appears on tables from the Georgian and Victorian periods. It signals careful attention to surface decoration.

What is a cross stretcher?

A cross stretcher is a structural wooden brace that connects the legs of furniture near the floor. It forms an X shape to reinforce the frame and prevent wobble. This feature appears on various tables and stools in the listings. It contributes to both the utility and the aesthetic of the support structure.

How should I care for antique wood?

Antique wood requires stable environmental conditions away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the finish without damaging the patina. Avoid liquid polishes containing silicone. Proper humidity control prevents the timber from splitting or warping over time.
