Will a modern mattress fit an antique walnut bed?

Many older beds were built to historic dimensions which may differ slightly from modern standard sizes. Checking the internal rail measurements ensures your mattress drops in correctly. Modern mattress depth also varies, so confirming the height of the side rails helps maintain the correct proportions against the headboard.

How do I care for walnut wood furniture?

Walnut benefits from occasional polishing with suitable beeswax to nourish the timber and maintain its natural lustre. Avoiding direct sunlight prevents the rich brown tones from fading unevenly. Keep wooden frames away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber or veneers from drying out and cracking.

How do I assemble an antique bedstead?

Most antique wooden beds utilise iron side rails that hook into slots on the headboard and footboard posts. Tapping the joints gently with a rubber mallet helps secure them firmly. Adding modern wooden slats across the side rails creates a stable platform to support your mattress safely.

What is the difference between solid walnut and walnut veneer?

Solid walnut uses thick timber throughout the structural parts of the bed frame. This allows for deep hand carving on posts and rails. Walnut veneer applies thin slices of choice timber over a stable secondary wood core. This technique displays striking grain patterns without warping.
