Are the frames original to the paintings?

Many pieces retain frames contemporary to their creation or the era in which they were retailed. Some incorporate period surrounds added later to complement the aesthetic of the artwork. Examining the backboards, fixings, and timber patina helps determine whether the frame and the artwork have a long-standing association.

How do I care for framed oil paintings?

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight and steady sources of artificial heat to protect both the canvas and the wooden surround. Gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush is generally sufficient for maintenance. Avoid using liquid cleaners or household sprays on the canvas or the exposed timber surfaces, as moisture can cause lasting damage.

What periods are represented?

The selection spans multiple centuries, with notable representation from the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. Victorian and Edwardian pieces appear frequently alongside earlier Georgian and seventeenth-century works. Each era brings distinct stylistic traits, from baroque portraiture to early modern wartime watercolours.

Panel paintings utilise a solid wooden support rather than flexible canvas or paper. Oak was a preferred material for these rigid surfaces in earlier European art. Looking closely at the edges reveals the grain of the wood, distinguishing a panel piece from standard canvas stretched over wooden bars.
