What is an elbow chair?

An elbow chair is an armchair designed with wooden supports for the arms, smaller than a full-scale easy chair. These pieces served specific roles in the home, such as seating at a writing desk or at the head of a dining table. They appear in various historic styles, matching the dining chairs or desk furniture of their respective periods.

Where were these chairs used?

These chairs served multiple rooms in historic houses, from formal dining spaces to morning rooms and libraries. Desk chairs provided functional seating for writing and administrative work. Morning room and occasional chairs offered movable seating for sitting by a window or reading.

Are Edwardian chairs authentic antiques?

Edwardian chairs date from the early twentieth century and reflect the design revivals popular during that era. While younger than Georgian or Regency pieces, they represent quality craftsmanship from that period. Makers frequently reproduced Chippendale and Sheraton styles using traditional mahogany and inlay techniques.
