How were these gongs used?

These gongs served a primarily functional role in large homes to announce the arrival of meals or to summon household staff from distant rooms. Strikers or mallets hung alongside the frame, allowing residents to produce a loud, resonant tone that carried easily through hallways and multiple storeys.

Where should I place a floor gong?

Their substantial size and architectural presence make entrance halls, wide corridors and large living spaces ideal locations for display. Sufficient clearance around the frame allows the suspended metal disc to vibrate freely without dampening the sound when struck.

How do I date a dinner gong?

Stylistic clues within the wooden frame provide the clearest indication of period, ranging from nineteenth century Gothic revival carving to nineteen thirties Art Deco minimalism. Materials also offer guidance, as heavier carved oak and walnut typify Victorian and Edwardian examples, while later pieces often employ simplified geometric layouts.

What is the difference between brass and bronze discs?

Metal composition affects both the visual appearance and the acoustic properties of the hanging plate. Bronze generally offers a deeper, more resonant tone with longer sustain compared to standard brass alloys of similar thickness.
