What were brass fitted travelling cases used for?

Travellers used these cases to transport personal grooming items, correspondence, jewellery, and medical supplies securely while on the move. The internal fittings kept glass bottles, silver brushes, and small valuables organised during rough carriage or ship journeys. Wealthy Victorians and Edwardians relied on them to maintain domestic standards of dress and hygiene away from home. Gentlemen carried fitted writing and shaving kits, while ladies transported comprehensive dressing and jewellery boxes.

How do I tell a Victorian case from an Edwardian one?

Victorian examples frequently employ dense timbers like coromandel and walnut alongside heavy brass binding and lavish velvet interiors. They tend toward elaborate compartmentalisation and deep buttoned leather details. Edwardian pieces often reflect a shift toward lighter luggage forms, including canvas trunks, vellum suitcases, and crocodile leather vanity cases. The hardware becomes slightly more streamlined while retaining robust brass locks and corners.

Are the glass and silver fittings usually original?

Many surviving cases retain their matched sets of cut glass bottles and silver-topped jars nestled into dedicated velvet slots. Makers often numbered both the wooden interior and the base of the glass inserts to ensure correct placement. Replacements do occur due to breakage during centuries of travel, so matching glass patterns and hallmarks provide vital clues to originality. Complete sets with their original components command the strongest interest.

How should I clean a leather and brass travel case?

Leather surfaces benefit from careful application of appropriate conservation wax or neutral leather food to maintain flexibility and prevent drying. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the historic finish or discolour the hide. Brass hardware responds well to gentle cleaning with a soft cloth to remove dust without disturbing the mellow patina. Care must be taken around fabric linings and paper labels inside the case to keep moisture away.
