What makes camphor wood special?

Camphor wood contains natural aromatic oils that emit a distinct, moth-repelling scent. This property made the timber ideal for protecting woollens and paper documents during long ocean voyages. Over decades, the wood mellows in tone while retaining much of its characteristic fragrance. The dense grain also accepts polishing well, giving the exterior a warm, lustrous finish.

Military trunks required heavy reinforcement to endure rough handling by baggage handlers, dock workers and pack animals. Brass corners and straps absorbed impacts and stopped the wood splitting. How should I clean a camphor box?

Dust the exterior gently with a dry, soft cloth to protect the dry surface of the wood. Avoid modern chemical polishes or excessive moisture, which can damage old finishes and dull the brass. For the brass mounts, a mild cleaner applied sparingly on a cotton swab prevents tarnish without touching the surrounding timber. Keeping the box out of direct sunlight preserves the natural colour of the camphor.
