What were these coffers originally used for?

These pieces served multiple practical purposes including storing blankets, carrying personal belongings during travel, and housing specialised tools for shipwrights and cabinet makers. Their robust construction protected valuable contents from moisture, dust and theft. Over time, households adapted them for general domestic storage, placing them at the foot of beds or in hallways to keep rooms tidy while utilising the surface space.

How do I clean a lacquered surface?

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent abrasive particles from scratching the delicate finish. Avoid using chemical cleaners, wax or excessive water, which can damage aged lacquer. If deeper cleaning is necessary, use a barely damp cloth with mild soap, drying the area immediately with a lint-free towel to protect the historical coating.

Can I use a coffer as a coffee table?

Many sturdy wooden and iron bound trunks feature flat tops that lend themselves well to use as low tables in a living space. Their internal storage provides a convenient place to stow away books, blankets or board games. Ensure the lid hinges and structure remain stable enough to support items placed on top without risking damage to the antique timber or decorative finish.

How do I date an antique chest?

Examine the construction methods, including the type of fasteners used, hand-cut dovetails, and the wear patterns on the wood. Secondary woods inside the piece often provide clues to the region of origin and manufacturing era. Stylistic details such as brass hardware styles, painted motifs, and historical locks help narrow down the period from the eighteenth century through to the early twentieth century.
