How do I care for a lacquered table surface?

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent micro-scratching on the glossy finish. Avoid placing the table in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the lacquer from cracking. Keep liquids away from the edges and use coasters under glasses to protect the painted decoration from moisture rings.

Were these tables used for dining?

These pieces were designed primarily as light portable furniture for holding drinks, books, sewing items, or decorative lamps rather than heavy meals. Card tables and larger tilt-top surfaces accommodated evening games or writing, but everyday dining remained the function of larger stationary dining tables.

How can I tell a Victorian piece from an Edwardian one?

Victorian examples often utilise heavy papier-mâché bases with mother-of-pearl inlay or dense Chinoiserie scenes depicting traditional figures and garden landscapes. The finish tends to show deep craquelure developed over time. Edwardian and early twentieth-century pieces frequently lean towards simpler ebonised frames, cleaner lines, and sometimes export origins from Burma or China with distinct regional motifs.

Can I use a tray table as a coffee table?

Many tray tables sit at a suitable height to serve as compact coffee tables or lamp tables in a modern sitting room. Ensure the stand is stable and capable of supporting the items you place upon it. Removable tray tops offer the added convenience of carrying refreshments directly from the kitchen to the living space.
