What were these boxes used for?

These caskets served domestic functions for storing valuable personal items, sewing tools, or letters. Interior compartments and lift-out trays kept smaller accessories organised and protected from dust.

How do I date a black lacquered box?

Dating relies on examining the construction materials, hinge types, and decorative styles characteristic of periods like the Regency or Victorian era. Papier-mâché cores and specific motifs such as penwork or Chinoiserie provide strong chronological indicators.

How should I clean my lacquer box?

Maintenance requires only a soft, dry cloth to remove dust gently from the surface. Water, alcohol, and modern chemical cleaners will damage the delicate lacquer finish and gold leaf details.

Are all black lacquer boxes made of wood?

Many examples utilise papier-mâché as the primary body material rather than solid timber. This moulded composite provided a stable, smooth substrate ideal for taking fine layers of black lacquer.
