What are black iron firedogs?

Black iron firedogs are heavy metal supports placed inside a fireplace to hold logs above the hearth floor. They improve airflow beneath the wood for a better burn. These pieces typically come in matched pairs and feature upright front guards. They range from plain nineteenth century utilitarian designs to decorative Arts and Crafts creations.
