What is a console table?

A console table is a wall-mounted or freestanding table designed to sit flat against a vertical surface. Historically, these pieces served as decorative ledges for displaying ornaments or mirrors. In modern rooms, they work well in hallways, living rooms, and dining areas where floor space is limited. Their narrow profile provides surface utility without blocking foot traffic.

How do I care for ebonised wood?

Ebonised wood requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent surface scratching. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and silicone polishes that can dull the dark finish. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out. Maintaining stable indoor humidity protects both the wooden structure and any delicate gilt work.

Are marble tops original?

Marble tops on antique tables were often fitted during manufacture to provide a durable, cool surface for drinks or decorative objects. Many period consoles paired stone with wooden bases to add weight and formal presence. Examining the underside and the fit against the wooden frame helps determine if the marble is contemporary to the base. Original tops sit flush and match the wear patterns of the rest of the piece.
