What is an ebonised console table?

An ebonised console table is a side table finished in a dark, polished stain or coating designed to imitate solid ebony. These pieces were particularly popular during the nineteenth century across various revival styles. They are built to stand flat against a wall, frequently serving as decorative hallway furniture or display surfaces beneath mirrors.

How do I date an ebonised table?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, secondary woods, and stylistic clues within the design. Regency and Victorian examples often exhibit specific proportions and decorative vocabularies tied to their respective decades. Hardware fixings, timber shrinkage, and the type of finish applied underneath the ebonising also provide physical evidence of age.

Where should I place a console table?

Console tables function best in entrance halls, living rooms, or dining spaces where they sit against a wall to display decorative objects. Their shallow depth ensures they do not obstruct walkways while providing useful surface area. Pairing them with a matching mirror or artwork hung directly above creates a balanced focal point in an interior.

What is the difference between a console and a centre table?

A console table is designed to stand flat against a wall, often featuring a finished front and sides while the back remains plain or unadorned. A centre table is freestanding and finished on all sides for viewing from any angle in a room. Centre tables frequently take circular or square forms, whereas console tables are commonly rectangular or semi-circular.
