Are these lamps safe to use today?

Most antique lamps have been converted or rewired during their lifetime to accommodate modern electrical standards. It remains advisable to have a qualified electrician inspect the wiring and components before regular bedside use. The original ceramic bodies house the electrical hardware safely, provided the brass fittings and internal rods are securely fastened without placing undue stress on the antique material.

How do I clean an antique ceramic lamp?

Dust the ceramic body and any silk or fabric shades gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges that might damage hand-painted glazes or delicate enamel work. Keep moisture away from the electrical fittings and the wiring entry points at the base. Regular, gentle maintenance preserves the surface decoration without risking the integrity of the antique finish.

How can I tell Satsuma from Kutani?

Satsuma ware typically displays a distinct finely crackled ivory or cream-coloured earthenware glaze beneath detailed polychrome and gilt decoration. The underlying body tends to be a heavier earthenware rather than hard-paste porcelain. Kutani porcelain generally exhibits a whiter ceramic base paired with bolder, more saturated enamel colours, notably iron red and deep greens. The designs on Kutani pieces frequently focus on narrative scenes and stylized nature motifs.

Can I replace the lampshade safely?

Replacement shades are easily fitted to standard harp or bridge fittings attached to the lamp hardware. Ensure the scale of the shade complements the proportions of the ceramic vase without overwhelming its silhouette. Selecting fabrics like silk or high-quality linen helps maintain the traditional aesthetic established by the period base. Pay attention to the shade drop and bulb wattage to prevent excessive heat near the upper rim of the ceramic.
