How do I fit a modern mattress?

Antique wooden single bed frames often measure to historic dimensions rather than modern standard sizes. Checking internal rail lengths and widths ensures a proper fit for contemporary mattresses. Custom slatted bases or minor interior adjustments can adapt older wooden frames to hold standard single mattresses securely without altering the exterior appearance.

Are these beds sold in pairs?

A substantial portion of surviving single beds emerge as matched pairs rather than lone items. These originated for guest chambers and large residences. Pairs often include matching bedside cabinets or side tables, providing a coordinated arrangement for twin bedroom layouts.

How do I identify the period?

Period identification relies on timber choice, decorative motifs, and construction methods. Edwardian pieces often display inlaid mahogany, while 1930s examples favour blonde satinwood and burr walnut. Maker labels, specific carving styles tied to the Arts and Crafts movement, and registration marks offer further chronological clues for dating a frame.

Can I dismantle the frame?

Most wooden single beds utilise historical bolt systems or slot-in rails designed for transport and relocation. These allow the headboard, footboard, and side rails to separate safely. Careful handling of antique metal fixings and aged timber tenons during assembly preserves the stability of the structure.
