How were antique wine caddies used?

These pieces sat beneath or beside the dining table to keep bottles within arm's reach of the host during long meals. Servants filled the lead-lined interiors with ice and water to chill the wine before serving. Smaller caddies and bottle carriers also functioned as portable stands to transfer vintages from the cellar to the dining room safely.

How do I distinguish Georgian from Victorian pieces?

Georgian examples rely on restrained proportions, premium mahogany grain, and classical brass ring handles or bracket feet. The woodwork focuses on clean architectural lines and subtle inlay. Victorian and later pieces often introduce heavier ornamentation, elaborate carving, silver plate mounts, and novel forms like the sarcophagus or expanding bottle wagon.

Can I use an antique wine caddy today?

Many collectors continue to utilise them for their original purpose as bottle holders or ice buckets beside a modern dining table. Their sturdy timber construction and lead linings remain practical for holding wine. Smaller carriers and coasters transition easily onto sideboards or coffee tables to display bottles during gatherings.

What is a coopered cellarette?

A coopered cellarette is built using curved wooden staves fitted tightly together and encircled by brass bands. This traditional barrel-making technique gave the timber the strength needed to withstand damp ice and heavy glass bottles. This method is particularly common in oval and octagonal wine coolers from the eighteenth century.
