A tantalus is a locking wooden frame that holds decanters upright and prevents guests or servants from accessing the whiskey without a key. The metal bar locks over the stoppers, keeping the spirits visible yet secure inside cases made of oak, coromandel, or mahogany.

How do I date an antique whiskey decanter?

Dating relies on hallmarks upon the silver collars and mounts, the depth and style of the glass cutting, and the overall form of the cabinet work. Edwardian and Victorian pieces often feature distinct star-cut bases, heavy lead crystal, and standardised silver date letters corresponding to assay office records.

What is a whiskey noggin?

A whiskey noggin is a small, handled jug designed to hold a single individual measure of spirit for the evening. These miniature decanters usually incorporate a sterling silver rim and spout, frequently accompanied by a small hanging label denoting the contents.

Can I use antique decanters for daily serving?

Most antique crystal and glass decanters remain entirely functional for holding and pouring whiskey today. Care must be taken with stoppers to ensure a proper fit, and hand washing is essential to preserve the clarity of the cut lead crystal.

Are stoppers usually original?

Many decanters retain their original matching stoppers, ground to fit the specific neck of that individual bottle. Because stoppers were easily broken or swapped over decades of use, inspecting the fit and glass tone helps determine if a stopper is a period replacement.
