How do I date a walnut desk cabinet?

Dating relies on construction methods, timber choice, and the overall style of the piece. Earlier pieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries often display candle slides, Herringbone banding, and oak secondary woods, whereas Victorian and Edwardian examples show machine-sawn elements and different interior arrangements. Hardware, locks, and foot styles also shift between periods, moving from bun feet and bracket feet to plinths and castors as time progresses.

Where should I place an antique desk cabinet?

These pieces require stable room conditions away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes, which can dry out walnut veneer and cause warping. Placing them against an interior wall protects the timber from exterior dampness. Ensure adequate clearance for drop-fronts, tambour doors, or pull-out writing surfaces so the mechanism operates without strain.
