How do I identify a tribal rug?

Tribal rugs are distinguished by their geometric designs, asymmetric or village styling, and use of saturated natural dyes. They often feature repeating motifs, stylized animals, and tribal markers unique to specific nomadic groups. Unlike urban workshop carpets with curved floral designs, tribal pieces display a spontaneous, direct approach to pattern layout that reflects the weaver's immediate environment and heritage.

Where were these woven?

The pieces originate from nomadic confederacies and mountain villages across Persia, the Caucasus, Anatolia, and Central Asia. Major groups include the Afshar, Qashqai, Khamseh, Ersari, and various Caucasian tribes. Each region developed specific weaving structures, wool qualities, and colour palettes that allow experienced collectors to trace their geographic and tribal roots.

How do I care for antique wool rugs?

Regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar removes surface grit that can damage the wool pile over time. Professional cleaning tailored for antique textiles should be utilised periodically rather than domestic washing. Keeping the rug out of direct, prolonged sunlight prevents the natural dyes from fading prematurely, ensuring the rich colours endure in your interior space.

What is abrash in tribal weaving?

Abrash refers to the natural colour variations seen across the field of a rug, caused by shifts in dye batches or different dye pots used during production. This tonal striping is a hallmark of hand-spun wool and natural dyeing. Rather than a defect, knowledgeable buyers view abrash as evidence of authenticity and handcrafted charm that distinguishes antique textiles from modern factory-made carpets.
