What is a toilet table?

A toilet table is a piece of furniture designed for personal grooming and dressing. It typically incorporates a mirror and small drawers for cosmetics and jewellery. Historically, these tables evolved from simple folding stands into elaborate dressing units in mahogany, walnut, and satinwood during the Georgian and Victorian periods.

How do I date a swing mirror?

Dating relies on timber choice, bracket shapes, and the construction of the base box or uprights. Earlier Georgian examples often feature slender, swept horns and mahogany framing. Later Victorian and Edwardian pieces tend to show heavier turned supports, simpler box bases, and machine-cut brass hardware.

Where were these pieces used?

These items belonged in private bedrooms and dressing rooms of townhouses and country estates. They provided a private space for morning routines. Smaller tabletop versions sat atop existing chests of drawers or writing desks to conserve space in smaller chambers.

Are the mirrors original?

Many antique frames retain their original mercury glass, which often exhibits light foxing and oxidation spots. Replacement mirror glass appears frequently in pieces subjected to heavy use over centuries. Examining the backing boards and silvering helps determine whether the glass dates to the original period of manufacture.
