What is a pole screen used for?

A pole screen was traditionally placed near a fireplace to protect a lady's face from the intense radiant heat of an open coal fire. The adjustable panel could be raised or angled as needed. Over time, these pieces transitioned into decorative accessories for the parlour, prized for the intricate hand-stitched needlework displayed on their central frames.

How do I date an antique tapestry screen?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, furniture style, and stitching techniques of the panel. Regency and William IV examples often feature rosewood or mahogany with crisp tripod bases, while Victorian pieces incorporate heavier walnut frames and ornate floral needlepoint. Earlier eighteenth-century pieces display simpler George III framing or woven verdure textile work, whereas later turn-of-the-century items incorporate Art Nouveau brass or copper elements.

Where should I place a room divider screen?

Large multi-fold screens suit spacious rooms where they can segment an open area or create a private partitioned corner. They also function effectively as decorative backdrops against plain walls. Smaller cheval or pole screens fit well beside seating areas, serving as freestanding focal points that showcase historic textile art.

Are tapestry screens fragile?

The textile panels require careful placement away from direct, strong sunlight to prevent the silk and wool threads from fading or becoming brittle. Regular, gentle dusting helps maintain the condition of the woven surface. The wooden frames benefit from standard furniture care, maintaining stable humidity levels to protect the antique timber and joinery.
