Dating relies on examining timber species, construction methods, hardware, and stylistic details. Walnut predominated in the early eighteenth century before mahogany rose to prominence. Secondary woods inside drawers and the style of dovetail joints also offer clues to the era of manufacture. Comparing the moulding profiles with documented period pieces helps narrow down the decade.

Where should I place a tallboy bookcase?

These tall pieces require walls with adequate height and sturdy flooring to support their considerable weight. Libraries, studies, and high-ceilinged living rooms provide ideal settings. Because they combine storage and display, they work well as focal points in rooms with minimal other furniture. Ensure the room has stable humidity to protect the antique wood and veneer.
