How do I date an antique sterling silver jug?

Dating relies on the stamped hallmarks found on the silver body or mount. These marks typically include a standard mark, a town mark, and a date letter specific to the assay office. Style also offers clues, as Georgian pieces favour neoclassical restraint while Victorian and Edwardian examples lean toward heavier floral chasing or clean Art Nouveau lines.

Were all these jugs used for cream?

No, utility varied extensively by shape and size. Small vessels served milk or cream for tea, while larger handled pieces functioned as sauce boats or gravy jugs. Tall glass vessels with hinged lids acted as claret jugs for wine, and stoneware flagons handled beer or cider.

How should I clean my silver jug?

Gentle washing in warm soapy water with a soft cloth removes everyday dust and residue without damaging the surface. Avoid abrasive dips or harsh scrubbing brushes that wear away thin silver and obliterate subtle hand-chased details. Occasional use of a reputable silver polish maintains the natural lustre without stripping the patina built up over centuries.

Why do some silver jugs have gold inside?

The golden interior is a gilt wash applied to protect the sterling silver from tarnishing and chemical corrosion. Dairy products, wine, and fruit juices react aggressively with raw silver, so the gold layer acts as a barrier.
