How were urn coolers used?

These vessels stood on dining tables or sideboards filled with ice or cold water to chill wine and champagne during large meals. Servants used them to keep bottles at the correct temperature throughout long dinner services before transferring them to guests.

How do I clean my cooler?

Wash the interior and exterior gently using warm water and a mild, non-abrasive liquid soap with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical dips that strip plate from Old Sheffield items, and dry thoroughly to prevent water spots.

Are these pieces waterproof?

Many older plated coolers hold water successfully for ice and bottles during an evening. Inspect the interior joints and base seams carefully before filling, as centuries of use can create microscopic leaks in soldered joints.

How do I date a cooler?

Look to the overall neoclassical or regency form, the presence of Old Sheffield plate construction methods, and any engraved crests or maker marks. Sterling pieces often feature legible hallmarks that pinpoint the exact year and assay office of production.
