How do I date my frame?

Examine the silver hallmarks stamped near the edge of the metal border. These tiny symbols typically include a date letter, a town mark for assay offices such as Birmingham, and a purity standard. Comparing these marks against official assay records reveals the exact year the frame was tested and certified.

What backs did original frames have?

Original period frames frequently utilised wooden backboards covered in black leather or coloured velvet. Oak supports and easel stands were also common during the Edwardian and George V eras. Many of these organic backing materials remain intact alongside original brass or metal hinge struts.

How do I clean antique silver?

Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to gently remove dust from the silver surface. Avoid harsh chemical dips that strip away patination and damage delicate wooden or fabric backings. Apply a specialist silver polish sparingly with a separate cloth, taking care to avoid touching any inset tortoiseshell or glass.

Can I replace the glass?

Original glass panes often feature minor bubbles or irregularities typical of early manufacture. Retaining this glass preserves the historical integrity of the piece. If replacement is necessary, a professional glazier can cut a thin pane to fit the exact rebate behind the silver mount.
