What is a regency sideboard?

A regency sideboard is a dining room storage unit produced during the early nineteenth century, characterised by classical proportions and rich timber veneers. These pieces combine flat cupboard doors with central drawer arrangements. They function as both serving surfaces during meals and storage cabinets for silver, linen, and glassware. The form evolved from eighteenth-century Georgian server designs into more architectural cabinet configurations.

How do I spot a chiffonier?

A chiffonier is a smaller variant of the sideboard, typically featuring enclosed cabinet doors beneath a shallow waist. Many versions include a tiered superstructure or shelf back supported by columns. They appear more frequently in rosewood and mahogany finishes suited to intimate reception spaces rather than grand formal dining halls.

Did they use marble tops?

Some high-end Regency sideboards and chiffoniers feature inset marble tops rather than polished timber surfaces. These stone slabs provide durable, cool counters for resting dishes. They appear predominantly on rosewood and exotic wood cabinets destined for fashionable drawing rooms and formal parlours.

How do I care for mahogany?

Maintain antique mahogany by applying a light coat of traditional beeswax to nourish the dry timber grain. Avoid placing the sideboard near direct heat sources or strong sunlight to prevent veneer splitting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth rather than using modern aerosol polishes that leave chemical residue on historic surfaces.
