What is a duet music stool?

A duet music stool is an extended bench built to accommodate two musicians sharing a piano. They frequently include hinged seats or drop-front doors to hold double the amount of sheet music. These wider benches served Victorian and Edwardian households where family music-making was a central social activity.

How do revolving piano stools work?

Revolving piano stools operate on a large central wooden screw enclosed within the central column. Turning the seat clockwise or counter-clockwise raises or lowers the player to the desired height. This mechanism allowed different musicians to adjust their seating position quickly without the need for loose cushions.

Where were music benches used?

Music benches were placed beside upright pianos, grand pianos, and organs in the parlours and music rooms of nineteenth and early twentieth-century homes. Their storage compartments kept scores tidy and close to hand. Today, buyers frequently repurpose these low seats as dressing table chairs or window seats in living areas and bedrooms.

How do I identify an Edwardian music bench?

Edwardian music benches typically feature lighter mahogany timbers combined with delicate satinwood inlay and Sheraton revival motifs. The upholstery often utilises contemporary fabrics or leather attached to lift-up lids. Cabinetmakers of this period leaned towards refined, slender legs and lighter proportions than their heavy Victorian predecessors.
