Where should a psyche go?

A freestanding cheval mirror requires sufficient floor space to allow the frame to angle safely without crowding surrounding furniture. Placing the piece near natural light from a window enhances its reflective capacity. Bedrooms and dressing rooms remain the traditional locations for these tall mirrors, though spacious hallways also accommodate them well. The floor surface beneath needs to be level to ensure the castors or feet rest evenly.

How do the pivots work?

The glass frame hangs between two vertical posts on metal screw pins or pivot bolts inserted into flush plates on the sides. Tightening or loosening these side screws controls the resistance of the swing movement. Over decades of use, these pivot mechanisms require careful adjustment to prevent the heavy glass plate from slipping out of position. Keeping the hardware properly aligned protects both the wooden frame and the surrounding mountings from unnecessary strain.

Are these mirrors heavy?

Solid mahogany frames combined with thick historical glass plates create substantial overall weight that anchors the piece firmly to the floor. Moving a floor standing psyche requires lifting carefully rather than dragging, particularly when brass castors are present. Two people are typically required to relocate or transport these large mirrors safely without risking damage to the delicate joints. The heavy glass insert remains the most vulnerable component during any movement.

How do I date a psyche?

Stylistic indicators such as leg shape, carved motifs, and timber selection provide the primary clues for determining the age of a piece. Regency examples often feature sabre legs and brass mounts, while Victorian versions favour heavier turned columns and scrolling supports. Examining the construction methods used on the backboards and frame joints offers further verification of the manufacturing period. Secondary timbers hidden behind the mahogany veneer help confirm whether a piece belongs to the early nineteenth century or later.
