What is an antique liquor caddy?

An antique liquor caddy is a specialised wooden box, frame, or cabinet designed to hold and lock away decanters and bottles of spirits. These items were essential dining room accessories in wealthy households. They appear in various styles from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, ranging from mahogany cellarettes to oak tantalus sets with cut crystal bottles.

How did people use a tantalus?

A tantalus held expensive spirits securely in a wooden or metal frame secured by a locking mechanism across the necks of the decanters. This prevented servants or guests from helping themselves while still displaying the host's fine glassware. Opening the unit required a key, which the host kept to control access to the contents.

How do I date a mahogany cellarette?

Dating relies on stylistic clues and construction methods, with eighteenth-century pieces often featuring straight-legged or brass-bound bucket forms. Regency and early nineteenth-century examples frequently adopt sarcophagus shapes with carved paw feet or brass lion-mask ring handles. Later Victorian versions introduce heavier oak frames, silver-plated hardware, and mechanical locking bars associated with the tantalus.

Are the decanters usually original?

Many pieces retain their original matching cut crystal or glass decanters, which fit precisely into the internal wooden partitions or metal rings. Because glassware was prone to breakage over centuries of entertaining, some pieces have period-matched replacement decanters. Examining the wear on the base of the decanters and the fit within the caddy helps determine authenticity.
