How do I wind an antique wall clock?

Most mechanical wall clocks use a key inserted into winding holes on the enamel dial to tension the internal springs or lift the driving weights. Turn the key gently until you feel resistance, taking care not to overwind the movement. Ensure you match the correct key size to the square arbors to avoid damaging the delicate brass winding squares over years of regular use.

Why does my gilt clock look dull?

Gilt surfaces accumulate dust and airborne grease over decades, which settles into the recessed chased details of bronze ormolu and mutes the reflection of the gold leaf. Gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush is generally all that is required for routine maintenance. Avoid commercial metal polishes entirely, as abrasive liquids will strip thin layers of fire gilding or gold leaf from the underlying base metal.

Can these clocks run accurately today?

Antique mechanical clocks can keep reliable time when properly serviced, cleaned, and adjusted by a qualified horologist who understands vintage escapements. Variations in temperature and the levelness of the wall surface will influence how steadily the pendulum beats. Treat them as living historical objects rather than atomic timepieces, making minor adjustments to the pendulum bob to regulate the speed over a twenty-four-hour period.
