Where were antique geometric rugs made?

These rugs were produced across the Caucasus, Persia, Anatolia, and Central Asia by village and nomadic groups. Each region developed distinct palette preferences and structural habits. Weavers in areas such as Shirvan, Karabagh, Heriz, and Baluchistan relied on local materials to create pieces suited to both domestic life and trade.

How do I care for an antique rug?

Protect your rug by vacuuming gently without a rotating brush bar and keeping it out of direct, harsh sunlight. Rotating the piece periodically ensures even wear across the surface. Professional cleaning by specialists in antique textiles is essential to preserve natural wool and dye integrity. Avoid harsh chemical spot treatments at all costs.

What is a runner rug used for?

Runner rugs are long, narrow floor coverings designed specifically for hallways, corridors, and staircases. They introduce pattern and warmth to transitional spaces within a home. Historically, village and nomadic runners served practical insulation duties in narrow domestic passages while displaying tribal patterns.

How can I tell tribal rugs apart?

Distinguishing tribal rugs involves examining the specific structure, colour combinations, and repeating motifs unique to each weaving group. Caucasian rugs often feature crisp, bright geometry, whereas Baluch and Turkmen pieces favour deeper, subdued tones. Fringe construction, selvedge finishes, and wool quality also offer vital clues regarding the origin of a particular textile.
