What woods were used for these carvings?

Makers predominantly worked in dense domestic fruitwoods such as pear, apple, and cherry, which offered the fine, even grain necessary for intricate toolwork. These fruitwoods were frequently supplemented in larger items by oak, walnut, elm, yew, and hardwood.

How do I distinguish folk art from formal pieces?

Folk art items generally display a charming, naive execution created by regional makers for domestic or local use, often featuring personal touches like punchwork or bone inlay. Formal pieces align more strictly with recognised periods like Rococo or Gothic Revival, showing academic adherence to continental design styles.

Were these objects painted originally?

Most surviving pieces were left in the natural timber to develop a warm patination through handling and exposure to light over centuries. Surfaces typically rely on wax polishing rather than applied pigments to bring out the varied tones of the grain.

How should I care for antique fruitwood?

Keep wooden carvings away from direct heat sources and dramatic humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement or splitting. Apply a light application of microcrystalline wax periodically to maintain the surface sheen without building up sticky residues.
