How do I display antique plates safely?

Wall mounting requires specialised spring hangers that distribute weight evenly across the rim without causing stress fractures to the ceramic body. For cabinet display, use stable plate stands that secure the base and prevent accidental tipping. Keep delicate pieces away from direct sunlight and areas prone to significant temperature fluctuations. These environmental controls protect fragile enamels and gold leaf gilding from premature fading or flaking.

Were these plates used for dining?

Many items listed as dessert services or tea plates were produced for formal dining and entertaining among the upper classes. They served sweet courses, fruit, or small cakes at the conclusion of a meal. Other objects functioned strictly as cabinet pieces or decorative chargers meant for sideboard display. Assessing the wear patterns on the central well often reveals whether a dish saw active dining service.

What is the difference between transferware and handpainted china?

Transfer-printed pottery displays precise, repeating outlines applied mechanically via a paper template before glazing. Under close inspection, these lines show a stippled or printed matrix structure rather than individual brush strokes. Handpainted floral dishes exhibit natural variations in pigment density, overlapping brush marks, and individual artistic expression. Many nineteenth-century factories combined both techniques by using a printed outline filled in with hand-applied enamel colours.
