This small circular dish originates from the Meiji period around 1900, created in the Nagoya workshops using fine wire cloisonne and multi-coloured enamels over copper and brass. The surface displays a complex geometric mosaic pattern in shades of black, rust red, blue and dark grey, punctuated by two distinct reserves. An upper yellow reserve frames a bird in flight above flowering chrysanthemums, while a lower black reserve contains blooming lotus flowers, lush green foliage and a butterfly. The piece measures 21.5 cm wide, 21.5 cm high and 2 cm deep. Skilled brass wire work outlines the intricate motifs, bringing realistic detail to the flora and fauna across the plate. The reverse features bordered cloisonne rendered in blue enamel, completing the high-quality finish. The dish remains in excellent original condition with no apparent damage. It suits placement on a bookshelf, mantelpiece or display cabinet within a home, adding a vibrant focal point to a room as a decorative collector's item.

Japanese cloisonne, or shippo-yaki, reached its technical peak during the Meiji period (18681912). Artisans perfected techniques using thin copper or silver wires fixed to a metal body, filling the created cells with vitreous enamel pastes before multiple firings and meticulous hand polishing.

These decorative objects typically feature a base constructed from copper or brass. Fine metal wires form the intricate outlines of the design, which are then filled with coloured glass enamel pastes and fired at high temperatures.

Authentic period pieces exhibit precise, fine wirework with minimal enamel pitting or surface bubbles. The underside or base often features dark counter-enamel or neat gilding to protect the underlying copper base from structural warping during firing.

A small enamel dish can be displayed upright on a dedicated brass or wooden plate stand within a bookshelf or cabinet. Alternatively, it functions as a functional trinket tray atop a hallway console table or bedroom vanity.

Clean the surface gently using a dry, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical solvents, abrasive polishes, and immersion in water, as moisture can infiltrate hairline cracks in the enamel or corrode the exposed metal rims.
