How do I fit clothes inside an old wardrobe?

Many older wardrobes lack modern hanging depth because historic garments were shallower than today's attire. Buyers often add brass hanging rails or utilise the internal shelves and hooks provided in the original layout. For pieces with shallow depths, hanging clothes on front-facing pull-out rails or storing folded garments on shelves solves the practical storage challenge without altering the antique carcass.

How do I tell the difference between Victorian and Georgian pieces?

Georgian wardrobes and linen presses tend to exhibit restrained classical proportions, straight cornices, and dense timbers like mahogany. Their construction reflects eighteenth-century cabinet-making priorities. Victorian examples frequently introduce heavier mouldings, larger dimensions, arched double doors, and occasionally mirrored glass or pine construction intended for broader domestic markets.

How do I care for polished wood surfaces?

Maintaining antique timber requires keeping wardrobes away from direct heat sources and dramatic humidity fluctuations that cause wood to split. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the finish. Occasional application of traditional beeswax feeds the polish and protects the grain without building up synthetic residues that dull the historic surface.
