What is a corinthian capital?

A Corinthian capital is the ornate, uppermost part of a classical column decorated with carved acanthus leaves and scroll-like corners. It represents the most decorative of the ancient architectural orders. In antiques, these capitals appear either as architectural salvage fragments or as the decorative inspiration for table lamps and candlesticks.

How do I use a capital as a lamp?

Many antique Corinthian capitals and columns are manufactured or converted into table lamps and standard lamps. They function as upright vertical supports that anchor the height of the lighting fixture. Wiring is typically threaded through the central shaft, allowing the classical capital to sit directly beneath the lamp holder and shade.

What periods do these pieces date from?

The available selection spans from the seventeenth century through the Victorian, Edwardian, and early twentieth-century periods. Architectural stone and wood fragments often date earlier, while silver-plated and brass lamp conversions cluster around the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Revival styles such as Neoclassical and Continental Baroque heavily inform the design across all these eras.

What materials are commonly found?

Materials range widely across structural and decorative mediums, including cast brass, silver plate, ormolu, and electroplate. Stone versions utilise carved limestone and masonry, while other pieces feature carved mahogany, onyx, gesso, and cut glass reservoirs. Fabric frequently appears in the corresponding lamp shades paired with these metal and wooden column bases.
