How do I date an antique chest?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber choices, and hardware styles. Hand-cut dovetails and native woods typically indicate 18th-century origins, while machine-sawn components point to later Victorian production. Secondary woods inside drawers also help determine the geographic origin and period of manufacture.

What is the difference between a chest and a commode?

British pieces are typically designated as chests of drawers, featuring stacked wooden drawers from top to bottom. Continental European examples are usually called commodes and frequently feature marble tops and decorative mounts. Both terms frequently overlap in marketplace listings due to shared storage functions.

How were these pieces used historically?

These items served primarily as bedroom furniture for storing garments, linens, and personal valuables. Brushing slides provided an auxiliary surface for temporary tasks. In grand reception rooms, larger cabinets displayed decorative objects on their upper surfaces.

Are marble tops original to these pieces?

Many continental commodes from the 19th century were manufactured specifically to hold heavy stone slabs. Slate, grey marble, and Verde Alpi stones were fitted directly onto the wooden carcase. Checking for uniform seating and matching period fixings helps confirm originality.
