What is an antique coach table?

An antique coach table is a portable, folding piece of furniture designed for travel during the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras. They typically feature X-frames or collapsible bases made from hardwoods like mahogany or oak. These tables were built to pack flat into carriages or trunks while remaining sturdy enough for practical use upon arrival at a destination.

How do you fold a coach table?

Most coach tables rely on a hinged scissor action or interlocking cross frames that lift and pivot inwards. The top either detaches or folds down alongside the legs to create a compact flat unit. Care should be taken to check the alignment of the brass hinges before folding, ensuring no undue pressure is placed on the timber joints.

Where were coach tables used?

These tables saw service on horse-drawn coaches, military campaigns, and temporary outdoor gatherings. Their portability made them useful for dining, writing, or holding luggage while on the move. In modern settings, their compact nature makes them popular as side tables or occasional stands in smaller rooms.

How do I date an antique coach table?

Dating relies on timber choice, construction methods, and the style of the brass hardware. Georgian and early nineteenth-century examples often display simpler, heavier mahogany frames, while Edwardian versions may use walnut or lighter oak. Turned elements like bobbin legs or specific patent markings on the hinges also provide clues to the exact decade of manufacture.
