How do I maintain the mechanical movement?

Regular winding keeps the weights functioning properly, while professional cleaning prevents the accumulation of dust in the delicate brass gears. Avoid placing the timber case near direct heat sources or damp areas to protect the wood and veneer finishes.

Where were these pieces originally placed?

Large longcase clocks and floor-standing gongs usually stood in hallways, stairwells, or principal reception rooms where their acoustic chime could carry through the house. Smaller table gongs sat on sideboards or dedicated stands within dining spaces for easy access during meals.

How do I distinguish Victorian from Edwardian styles?

Victorian examples often favour heavy carved oak, Gothic Revival motifs, and monumental proportions with dark finishes. Edwardian pieces tend to introduce lighter inlaid mahogany timbers and more refined, delicate marquetry patterns.

What is the difference between bells and tubes?

Traditional nested brass bells produce a bright, sharp chime when struck by internal clock hammers. Tubular chimes offer a deeper, resonant sound reminiscent of cathedral bells, hanging vertically within the tall wooden case.
