What periods do these chairs come from?

The pieces span the Georgian, Regency and Victorian eras, alongside later nineteenth and early twentieth century examples. Cabinetmakers of these periods utilised timber and brass inlay according to prevailing design trends. Regency examples frequently display specific brass inlay patterns, while Victorian pieces often take the form of library armchairs or specialised seating.

How were brass elements incorporated into the wood?

Craftsmen routed shallow channels into mahogany or rosewood surfaces to embed thin strips of brass flush with the timber. This inlay technique adorned the top rails and splats of dining chairs. Other items utilise brass for structural frames, such as harpist seats and library chair supports, combining metal strength with upholstered comfort.

What upholstery materials appear on these chairs?

Original and replacement coverings include leather, fabric, hessian, calico and buttoned hide. Library armchairs frequently feature red, green or tan leather. Dining chairs often present bare wooden seats or upholstered pads finished in traditional textiles to match the timber frames.

How do I identify a Regency brass inlaid chair?

Regency dining chairs with brass inlay typically feature mahogany, rosewood or simulated rosewood timbers. The brass appears as precise geometric lines or classical motifs set directly into the wood. These chairs often share characteristics with bar back or tablet top designs popular during the early nineteenth century.
