What is an antique bowfront tallboy?

An antique bowfront tallboy is a tall chest of drawers featuring a curved, projecting front that combines vertical storage capacity with decorative presence. These pieces typically span the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian periods, utilising rich timbers such as mahogany and walnut.

How were antique tallboys used?

Historically, these tall chests served as primary bedroom storage for garments, linens, and personal items. Their stacked drawer configuration allowed households to store extensive wardrobes within a minimal floor area. Upper sections often accommodated folded textiles while lower, deeper drawers held heavier garments.

How do I style a tallboy at home?

A tallboy functions best as a central anchor against a bedroom or hallway wall, where its height draws the eye upward. Because of its vertical dominance, keeping surrounding surfaces uncluttered allows the curved front and timber grain to stand out. Pairing the piece with traditional or transitional furniture helps balance its imposing scale within a room.

How do I tell Georgian from Victorian pieces?

Georgian examples generally exhibit restrained proportions, fine cockbeading around drawers, and architectural cornices. The timber selection often emphasises natural mahogany grain rather than heavy ornamentation. Victorian pieces tend to be heavier in scale, sometimes utilising bolder veneers and darker finishes with more robust brass hardware.
